…In a nutshell, Pirates of the Caribbean takes place in well… the Caribbean.
Specifically, Port Royal is a location on Jamaica, Tia Dalma’s hut is located in Cuba, Tortuga is a part of Haiti, the Brethren Court is located on an island north of South America, and the Fountain of Youth can be found in Florida. And while Jack has traveled to places all around the world—such as Singapore—he is the Pirate Lord of the Caribbean and as such, considers the Caribbean his home.
Pirates of the Caribbean is also set in the 1740s. Thus, before America had declared independence. In fact, most cities in the New England colonies were only beginning to be established, let alone united and considering spitting in the face of the Most Powerful Empire in the World—England.
History: Jack Sparrow was born in the 1700s, off the coast of India, on a pirate ship, during a typhoon.
His father, Captain Edward Teague, Keeper of the Pirate Code and Pirate Lord of Madagascar, raised him on an island called Shipwreck Island. Being raised by the Keeper of the Pirate Code, Jack soon became intimately familiar on what a pirate can and should do in certain situations, and consulted the book numerous times in his adolescence. However, growing up living by the code did absolutely nothing to make Jack orderly. It merely gave him the guidelines with which to live by. (Although, how closely he follows the code is dependent upon any given moment.)
During his teenage years, Jack ran away from Shipwreck Island and found himself on a merriment of adventures. Around the age of 25, Jack Sparrow became determined to prove himself a rebel. However, one has to ask. How can the son of a pirate prove himself rebellious? By taking a government job! Yes, one thing led to another, and Jack found himself working under Cutler Beckett as a part of the East India Trading Company. Proving himself apt and capable under stress, he was promoted to Captain of one of Beckett’s personal ships—The Wicked Wench. Jack agreed to becoming Captain so long as his ship is not used for slave transportation.
However, when Jack refused to relate the location of an island full of treasures, Beckett became angry and forced Jack to transport slaves to a higher up. In defiance, Jack released all the slaves on the same island he refused to divulge. This left Beckett in even more of a rage, and he burned The Wicked Wench and branded Jack as a pirate.
In a notorious escape, Jack fled to the remains of The Wicked Wench and called upon Davy Jones. He made a deal with Jones—Jones himself would resurrect The Wicked Wench and make Jack Captain of it for 13 years. In return, Jack would then serve upon Jones’ ship for a century. Jack agreed, and when The Wicked Wench was revived, Jack renamed his ship The Black Pearl.
Jack then returned to Tortuga, got himself a crew and sailed off as Captain Jack Sparrow. However, only 2 years had passed before Jack found himself mutinied upon and stranded on an island. Luckily, after three days, the rumrunners who made use of the island arrived and Jack was able to barter passage off the island.
The following eight years found Jack from place to place—from Jamaica to Cuba to Singapore—all with various ships and crews to find revenge on his mutinous First Mate and regain control of his ship. It was then that he showed up in Port Royal, shipless and crewless. He met up with the blacksmith William Turner, and the Governer’s Daughter Elizabeth Swann. With their help, Jack was able to finally corner Barbossa in an immortal battle and extract his revenge, as well as his possession of The Black Pearl.
However, his 13 years were just about over, and Jack began to look for a way to nullify his debt with Jones. This led him to the knowledge of the Heart of Davy Jones, upon which stabbing it makes you Captain. Jack then set out, once again with the help of Elizabeth and Will to find the heart.
However, not even Jack Sparrow can best death, and he found himself handcuffed to his ship and devoured by Davy Jones’ legendary beast—the Kraken.
Fortunately, the life of Jack Sparrow does not end there.
A guilty Elizabeth, a newly resurrected Barbossa, and a determined William showed up at Davy Jones Locker and were able to bring Jack Sparrow back to the world of the living.
Jack Sparrow was now faced with the knowledge that Cutler Beckett was now on a vendetta against all pirate ships—and more specifically, The Black Pearl. This led to a Brethren Court back at Shipwreck Island. Jack was therefore able to use his knowledge of the Pirate Code to get Elizabeth crowned Pirate King, with which she declared war. The war lasted no longer than one day, as Jack was successfully able to defeat both Davy Jones as well as Cutler Beckett.
Jack celebrates in Tortuga, his ship once again taken over by Barbossa, and with the maps to the Fountain of Youth in his possession.
Around one year later, Jack Sparrow arrives in London. His first mate, Joshamee Gibbs has been arrested and is sentenced to trial. There's only one thing for Jack to do--impersonate the judge and declare Mr. Gibbs guilty of being innocent. Reunited, the two of them take off only to be captured by the British government. Jack gets an audience with King George himself, where it is revealed that Barbossa, after letting the Black Pearl get captured, is no working for the King in order to find the Fountain of Youth.
Armed with this knowledge, Jack makes his escape, this time successful only by the help of Jack's father, Captain Teague. Teague and Jack share a drink while Teague explains that he's heard a rumor--Jack Sparrow is in London to gather a ship in the very bar they're sitting in. Since Jack had been doing no such thing, he investigates. Thereupon he finds his old love Angelica. The two of the only just meet before the British Navy attack the bar, still intent on finding Jack. Angelica and Jack escape and, seconds before he goes unconscious by a poison dart, Angelica reveals that she knows the ritual needed to complete the Fountain of Youth.
When Jack wakes up, he's on a ship, The Queen Anne's Revenge--the pirate ship run by Blackbeard. After several days without seeing the Captain, Jack proposes a mutiny where Blackbeard finally makes his appearance. Mutiny gained Jack council, and Blackbeard reveals he's after the Fountain of Youth himself, the very idea brought to him by his daughter, Angelica.
The make shore at White Camp Bay and capture themselves a mermaid, for mermaid tears are needed in the ritual. Next on the list are silver chalices, and Blackbeard sends Jack alone to obtain them. He meets up with Barbossa, and the two of them realize the Spanish have the chalices. Working together, they steal the chalices and make their way to the Fountain.
When Barbossa, Blackbeard, Angelica, Jack, the pirate crew and the English all meet at the Fountain, a fight breaks out. At least, until the Spanish arrive. The Spanish put an end to the fighting when the destroy the Fountain of Youth. With Blackbeard and Angelica both dying, Jack hurries to the Fountain and gathers just enough to save one person. He chooses Angelica, who gains all the years Blackbeard lived, and all the years he could have lived.
Jack takes the saved Angelica and maroons her on a deserted island. He then meets up with Mr. Gibbs, who has found the Black Pearl! Only, it's trapped in a bottle due to the magic of Blackbeard. Jack says he knows of a way to free his ship, and Jack and Mr. Gibbs walk away into the sunset.
Personality:
Jack Sparrow is an extremely contradicting, complex character.
Starting off, Jack is a pirate. This alone proves insight about this personality. He enjoys finding the legendary treasures of pirate lore and myth. However, that has less to do with his love of silver and gold, but his masochistic enjoyment of fighting his way out of dangerous situations Jack is quite an adrenaline junkie, and he enjoys proving the impossible, possible. It has gotten him in trouble more times than he can count. He has been killed, locked away, tortured, beaten, injured and branded due to his constant need for excitement. And still, Jack is somehow always able to escape, even in death.
However, Jack is not only a mere pirate. He is Captain Jack Sparrow. As captain, Jack has proven himself to be a very capable leader. Jack is not quick to anger. Never once has he snapped at his crew mates in anger, stress, or panic. He releases anger in the form of sarcasm and sword fighting, not on the crew needed to help run his ship. He is always calm under horrible, stressful conditions. His leadership and command The Black Pearl has saved many lives over the years. He has shown time and time again that Jack Sparrow is certainly someone to count on in a stressful situation.
(One thing of particular note is that most ships at the time had a helmsman—a man whose sole job is to sail the ship. Jack Sparrow, more times often than not, will take control of The Black Pearl during troubling weather and stressful situations. While he is more than confidant in Mr. Cotton’s ability to sail his ship, he feels some situations are better suited by the Captain himself, and is more than willing to do what he can.)
As a result of this, Jack has got himself a bit of an ego. Jack Sparrow knows his strengths very will and is able to play them up as much and as often as he can. He’s rather proud of the reputation he’s seemed to gather for himself…even if half his reputation is fake, altered stories to make himself look better than he already does. He has absolutely no problem taking the blame for stories that aren’t true, or have nothing to do with him, as long as it improves his reputation and ego.
The word arrogant is very similar to having a big ego, and Jack is just as guilty of that. He is willing to do whatever is necessary to keep himself alive, healthy and with as little injuries as possible. If that means he must double cross and manipulate many people several times, he will. In fact, he has done so enough times that his lies are barely perceptible from his truths. He is a master at lying and manipulation. Coupled together with the ability to read people extremely well, and it is a wonderful combination. Jack is able to properly manipulate most everyone into doing his bidding.
Most times, Jack knows exactly what he wants. Whither it is a treasure, the Heart of Davy Jones, The Fountain of Youth or silver and gold, once Jack his made up his mind, he will refused to change his mind and will not let anyone stand in the way of accomplishing his goal. If you happen to be in his way, you will either find yourself disposed of, manipulated, double crossed, or removed from the situation entirely.
However, even then Jack has his morals. He is loath to kill. He is very much at odds with the idea of killing someone with no reason, people close to him dying for him, or any other such thing. He also believes that a person is a person, no matter what their race, color, or ethnicity is. He even goes so far as to release a ship full of slaves on a nearby island, despite the action being a violation of his job. He’s got a conscience that just happens to speak up at the absolute wrong moment, and just in time for him to save the day, his companions, and the treasure.
That being said, Jack only knows whither his movements are planned out ahead of time or all of his notorious escapes and extravagant plans were merely improvised. Me, I believed it is a combination of the two. I believe he plans out what he wants to happen and, when unforeseen circumstances eventually pop up, he is able to improvise the situation enough to put it back on the rails, and to continue as normal.
However, for his plans to succeed, Jack would also have to be extremely smart. Thankfully, he grew up the son of a Pirate Lord and the Keeper of the Keys. Using his knowledge gained from the Code as well as his experiences and bits of trivia that was gained from his travel to different countries, Jack is certainly one of the most smart pirates in the Caribbean.
Jack is also very nostalgic. He takes something from his travels and keeps him on his person at all times. The beads in his hair, a tooth of the Kraken, his piece of eight, his bracelets, his tattoos, as well as various ribbon and cloth were all taken from a different place and each piece holds a different story.
Yet, he hides much of the general populace. And while he does drink rum in considerable amounts, he has never actually been drunk enough to blackout, lose his memories, lose his inhibitions and make a fool of himself by acting without thinking. Jack hides behind a mask of drunken stupors and selfish, arrogant words. He’s constantly acting drunk and flailing around The purpose of his act is quite simple. The more drunk he acts, the more unskilled he makes himself out to be, the greater the chance for people to underestimate him. And when people underestimate him, it makes fighting easier, and gives him more of a changes to strike at the opportune moment. In conclusion…Jack Sparrow is a complex individual. Not only is he drunken, selfish, arrogant, he is also a wonderful leader, intelligent and is plagued by a conscience.
Abilities, Weaknesses and Power Limitations:
Abilities:
-- First, the obvious. Jack is a good sword fighter. As a pirate, he'd have to be! Is he the best sword-fighter in the movies? Well... no. If Jack were to fight fairly, he would lose not only to Will, but Barbossa and Commodore Norrington as well. This fact is even obvious to Will with their first fight--"In a fair fight, I'd killed you!" This doesn't make Jack a bad sword fighter. Just... not the best. The only reason Jack manages to win... is by cheating. And he's good at it.
-- In all actuality, Jack is a lot more impressive with long range weapons--specifically guns. Having trained himself by shooting rum bottles off a post as a kid, his skill has done nothing but increase over this years. Jack proves this time and time again throughout the movies. He shot Barbossa through the heart at the opportune moment. He threw a coconut at one of Davy Jones' crew mates which landed dead center. He managed to shot a falling barrel of rum with one shot to damage the Kraken. He's also shot the Chest of Davy Jones out of the hands of Jones himself, whilst swinging on a rope. That's pretty impressive, you have to admit.
--Jack's got a dizzying intellect under that drunken stupor of his. Jack himself only know whither every single escape, every single turn of events that happens is meticulously planned out by Jack several steps ahead of everyone else... or everything is improvised at the turn of a hat. Either way, Jack has proved time and time again that he's able to keep calm in the face of danger... and somehow let everything fall exactly in his favor.
Weaknesses:
-- Jack is extremely selfish and arrogant. Most of his actions are of benefit to him and himself alone. In a bit of reverse karma, any time he's tried to do anything nice to help someone out, it comes back around and something worse ends up happening to him. As a result, he's learned to do nothing but that benefits others. It's a hard life, piracy, and if he doesn't look out for his own best interests, no one else is. Unfortunately, this has lead to a very arrogant attitude. Some of the stories floating around the Caribbean were completely made up, or altered in some way to improve his reputation as the Infamous Captain Jack Sparrow.
-- Jack doesn't like to kill if he can avoid it, and he certainly does not like the idea of people close to him, dying for him. It's what ultimately drove him back to the decks of the Black Pearl after managing to escape quickly and quietly. It's what stopped him from killing Will upon their first meeting. It's what stopped him from stabbing the heart of Jones himself, as Will lay dying next to him. It's what kept him from drinking at the Fountain of Youth--it takes lives from another person. It's why Jack dove into the water and saved Elizabeth, prompting their first meeting. As a list of his grievances was read against him, absolutely no mention of murder, nor rape, were present on this list.
(However, there are exceptions to his rule. Barbossa, Davy Jones and Cutler Beckett being the most noticeable.)
-- Jack can have a moral streak to him, at times. He's got his beliefs and will fight for them, even if they are widely different from popular opinion at the time. That's exactly the reason why he let his ship of slaves go--he doesn't believe that people are anything other than what they are--A person. He does know right from wrong, and, to his utmost chagrin, he always shows up to save the day. But not a moment before he has to.
Limitations:
--Jack Sparrow is, to his unending displeasure, only human. He has tried several times to gain immortality, but each time circumstances have prevented him from becoming The Immortal Captain Jack Sparrow. He's very aware that he's going to die--in fact, he already has! However... he knows next time he won't be so lucky. And while he'll plan on doing everything he can to gain immortality, he is only a human and he can only do so much.
Inventory:
-- A Flintlock Pistol
-- His sword
-- His compass
-- His black leather tricorn hat
-- Pirate garb of the 1740’s. Specifically: long brown boots, brown linen pants, a red and white striped sash, a torn white undershirt, a faded blue waistcoat, a long brown coat, three belts (two worn across his waist, the other across his front).
-- A red bandana
-- 4 different rings
-- Various beads, ribbons and trinkets.
Appearance:

Jack Sparrow is of average height (5'9") with brown eyes as well as brown and black hair. His hair is done up in dreadlocks, as well as littered with beads and other various objects from his adventures. He's got a mustache, goatee, and a beard which has been put into two braids and ended with more beads. His skin has been tanned by the Caribbean sun, and he has several golden teeth.
Jack Sparrow also has numerous tattoos and markings. The most obvious of which would be his pirate brand as well as his tattoo of a sparrow on his right arm. However, the more unnoticeable ones would be the rather large scar present on his left forearm, the two bullet hole-looking wounds on his chest, as well as the full poem of Desiderata on his back. Certainly, there are more markings, however they are all hidden and unseen.
Jack Sparrow's PB is Johnny Depp:

Log Sample:
Jack Sparrow had been in strange situations before. He’d temporarily been immortal as a skeleton, he’d fought off Davy Jones and his Kraken, he struck down Cutler Beckett at his most vulnerable. He’d died before, but not even that was as strange as this.
It took Jack several seconds, minutes, hours to regain his barings. He was almost under the impression that he’d somehow found his way back to Davy Jones’ Locker. But no…while the Locker was certainly as empty as this… wherever this was, he was certain the Locker wasn’t this… white.
It was then that he found a number on the inside of his arm, amongst his scars and tattoos. He frowned. “Well, that’s new.” He rubbed at it several times before determining it was a newly gained tattoo. What significance did the number 137 have? It was nothing like his other tattoos, and he certainly didn’t remember getting it.
He’d walked in a circle around the room several times, opening drawers, opening cabinets and finding nothing of interest. He opened one door and found himself looking at rows and rows of identical boxes. Sticking his head out the door, he looked left, and looked right. There was absolutely no one around.
“…’ello?” He called down the hallway. Of course, there was no answer.
With a shrug, he entered the hall with the rows of boxes. It was then that he noticed numbers lining all the boxes. He looked down at his arm. 137. He looked up at the row of boxes with numbers. He looked back down at his arm. He looked back up at the row of boxes. “…137, aye?”
He systematically walked right, watching at the numbers increased until he reached 137. He stared for a moment before reaching out and pulling the handle which opened box number 137, thus beginning his journey.
Comms Sample:
[When the feed begins, everyone is greeted with the celling! Hello, celling, how are you today? Oh, wait… don’t people usually start this? Well, it’s a bit odd that the celling would have something to say to you--]
[Oh, no wait! There is someone! Jack Sparrow peers over the edge of the screen, looking at the cellphone as if the Devil himself was contained inside of it. Somehow, he turned the device on, heard the automated voice, flailed, and threw the phone on the ground, where it started to record.]
[After a moment of giving the phone odd looks, he bends down and picks the phone up. Except wait! Jack, how did you get on the celling—oh, no. You’re holding the phone upside down, Jack.]
[He leans in closely to the phone, he leans back. He squints his eyes at the blinking red light. What is technology?]
[He peers left. He peers right. He looks back at the phone.] ...'t the lift, aye? What the bloody hell is a "lift"?
